Every busy family needs a high-quality workspace or home office. Call it your "Command Central". It doesn't have to be fancy. It just needs to be a space that supports the whole family in a way that offers structure and productivity. Let's dive into a few tips to create this important space in your home.
In the digital world that we now live in, you would think the amount of paper that enters your home would be much smaller. We need to stay ahead of the paper so it doesn't pile up. Before the mail even enters the doorway, consider standing at your garage recycle bin to dispose of junk mail and flyers that are not needed.
Only take mail inside that requires action. Actions needed could be filing, making a follow-up call, recording an important date for an event, or paying a bill. This one act of only bringing important papers inside will prevent paper build-up and office clutter.
Consider using a color-coded filing system for each member of the family. Using a specific color for different people will be a great visual when referencing a specific file for a specific person. We often create something we call an Action File system. Whether it is a standalone file organizer or in a file drawer, Action Files are those papers that still require action, like the ones mentioned earlier.
The most important part, however, is setting aside a few minutes each week to carry out the actions. Maybe it is every Saturday morning at 8:00 with a cup of coffee while everyone else is still asleep. Give yourself 30 minutes to get everything up to speed. Then you can move on to your next event.
A printing station will be essential for any reference or project printing. Be sure to always have backup paper and ink cartridges for black and color just in case you run out mid-project.
Whether it is a bookshelf or a cabinet, create a space for each family member to keep their supplies organized and separate. This can be used for notebooks, library books, extra paper, and writing instruments. This will eliminate the question, "Mom, where's my ______!"
Containers can be a great way to corral smaller like-items together, such as markers, colored pencils, and art supplies. Use lidded or closed containers for smaller items and open containers for larger and more frequently used items.
We always label containers so everyone in the house can see where things should go. No excuses–just read the label. Also try to encourage tidiness when sharing a space like this. Everyone needs to do their part to keep things organized for the rest of the family.

If you're concerned about having a smaller space for your Command Central, consider the vertical wall space. This is space that is often underutilized and extremely beneficial. You can use the wall for file systems, calendars, or shelving. This is a way to maximize the space available to each family member in the room.
No space stays organized on its own, especially a family workspace used by everyone. If your kids already have a chore chart in place, add "tidy your work space" as a new line item. If each family member does this for just a few minutes each day, it will stay organized and clutter-free for everyone involved.
If you're ready for an expert to bring function and order to your family workspace, we've got your back! Contact us, and let's get to know each other.

“I cannot recommend Karen Swart and her team enough! We were in the Kansas City area for a full summer, filming “The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning,” and Karen and her team were our behind the scenes death-cleaner helpers! They helped our Death Cleaners move quickly, efficiently, and thoroughly through people’s homes - and they did it with heart. Thank you, Karen! Stay Gentle!”
